Introduction

According to the World Health Organization, depression is a significant health issue that contributes to negative outcomes. More than half of the total global population experiencing depression lives in South East Asia and Western Pacific region primarily in countries such as India. Today, depression is one of the key health problems within India today. A review of the condition in India demonstrates shocking statistics where millions of people suffer from depression represents 4.5% of the total population [10]. According to the government estimates, 1 in every five people within the country experiences depression and requires counseling or psychological support in order to reduce negative outcomes associated with the condition. According to the World Health Organization report not only do 4.5% of the population experience depression but close to 38 million of the population also suffer from anxiety [10]. This statistics exemplifies the high concerns and severity of the health issue within the country creating the need for immediate interventions to reduce negative outcomes irrespective of the depression levels. According to [10], depression in India is a major contributor to the high cases of suicide primarily among the low and middle income population. Different factors such as low income/poverty and social factors such as exposure to negative parental relationships or violence contribute to the onset of depression in India. This research focuses on exploring how the two risk factors are influencing depression problem in India based on the available statistics and epidemiological data.
