A Sociological Analysis of “How’s Your Sugar?”
Introduction
According to the Australian Diabetes Society (2014), diabetes is one of the leading health problems in Australia today affecting close to one million people with 130,000 people of the total million diagnosed having type 1 diabetes. The silent pandemic has a significant impact on the population primarily the Aboriginal community due to their high vulnerability or risk levels. Diabetes is also associated with a myriad of complications which lowers the overall quality of life such as kidney problems and cardiovascular diseases. The Aboriginal community also reports high death rates associated with the condition as well as poor psychological well-being limiting their ability to cope with diabetes (Hill, Nielsen & Fox, 2013). As such, health promotion initiatives have been introduced primarily to the aboriginal community to enhance their capacity to understand their sugar levels and implement appropriate strategies to improve their wellness. Diabetes is a medical condition; however, its significantly influenced by the social and cultural experiences among the Aboriginal community.
