Self-Reflection on Clinical Placement

Introduction

Clinical learning goals and placement is based on enhancing the nurse’s knowledge by moving from theoretical learning within the classroom settings to practical learning in real-life situations characterized by making observations and performing critical interventions. According to Papastavrou, Dimitriadou, Tsangari & Andreou (2016), the clinical placement provides the basis for nurse students to make connections between actual cases and theoretical ones thus enhancing their skills to address different issues within the nursing settings. Learning goals increases the chances of critical thinking and emphasizing on observations and assessments as well as ensuring the accuracy of the initial diagnosis which promotes appropriate decisions. The ability to achieve the learning goals and placement in the clinical settings further enhances the chances of the nurses making explicit the intellectual connections as well as applying theory to patient care.

Part A: Clinical Learning Goals

My clinical learning goals are based on improving my knowledge within the clinical settings to improve my nursing practice as well as enhance the ability to deliver patient-centered care that promotes positive outcomes. The first clinical learning goals involve improving my cultural awareness as the basis for providing improved care to patients from different backgrounds. Cultural awareness goal is critical in all healthcare settings since they serve patients from diverse backgrounds suggesting that poor cultural competence has the potential of affecting healthcare outcomes (Bjørk, Berntsen, Brynildsen & Hestetun, 2014). Cultural awareness clinical learning goal promotes the chances of delivering comprehensive healthcare within the clinical placement area as well as promoting positive patient outcomes.
