Question

COU101: This written essay assignment constitutes the second part of the assessment for COU101 Theories in Counselling, Acknowledge Education Pty Ltd where the students are required to elaborate on their work done in the first part- group presentation. To complete this assessment, the students need to demonstrate their understanding and experience of working on the presentation with other team members. Solution

In the first part of this assessment, a group presentation was created with three other team members on the topic of Family Systems Theory. This present solution incorporates a detailed reflection report for the same.

The solution is divided into various sections- An Introduction, the student’s understanding of the Family Systems and Theory, a reflection on the Group processes and Dynamics followed by a brief Conclusion

Introduction

Firstly, a brief introduction is provided for the individual reflection-based report. Our experts have highlighted the purpose of writing this report here.

The Theory of Counselling module aims to introduce learners to counselling practices in the contemporary world that are tailored to meet the holistic therapy needs of a client. As part of the learning process, we were required to complete a group written assignment and presentation of one of the theories learnt in class.

Family Systems Theory

In the next section, our experts have presented a detailed understanding of the topic- Family Systems Theory on behalf of the student. The experts ensure that the group’s contribution to a better understanding of the topic is also highlighted in the reflection.

The group work helped me gain better understanding of the family systems perspective. Based on readings from class and during the group work, the family systems theory was developed by Murray Bowen in 1988 (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2017). Bowen believed that individuals could not be understood in isolation from other external systems that influence their behavior and decisions (Rivett, 2012). The theoretical approach to counselling capitalizes on systems thinking ideology and recognizes the family as a fundamental unit to client life, stating that an individual’s family is intrinsically linked to ones functioning and behavior (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2017). A system in this case is taken to be a set of units that are interconnected and organized around relationships. Like other psychoanalysts, Bowel aimed to develop a scientific and objective therapy processes and therefore sought to explore the client’s family of origin as a major influence to individual behavior (Rivett, 2012). The underlying philosophy of 3the family systems theory is that each client is best understood by evaluating their interaction with other family members (Titelman, 2014). I learnt that the development and actions of a single member of the family have an impact on the behavior of others in the family. Client symptoms are assumed to be the expression of behavioral patterns and habits within the client based family (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2017). The theory explains client symptoms to be an outcome of maladjustment to both the personal life and how the family operates. Behavioral challenges are considered to be an outcome of dysfunctional family patterns reflected across generations and within the larger community context, which lead to behavioral, social or emotional maladjustments (Titelman, 2014).

Group Processes and Dynamics

The following section presents a reflection on the group processes which were undertaken in creating the presentation. Our experts have ensured that the essay also uses evidence from the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) (2019) code of ethics, practitioners have an ethical obligation of promoting client safety by taking reasonable steps towards participating in multi-disciplinary teams. Our group work aimed to reflect a functional group process as suggested by ACA that would prioritize safety and collaborative decision making for better outcomes. Our group was made up of four members who each assumed a unique role and responsibility to help achieve the objectives of the group. Just as suggested by Barnlund (2017), a group refers to a collection of two or more people who work collaboratively to achieve shared objectives. Kurt Lewin’s theory of group dynamics stated that members of a group adopt roles and responsibilities that determine the duties, power dynamics and norms that govern behavior within the group (Beleza and Soares, 2019). Each role adopted by individual members placed a duty on the individual based on our objective of developing a strong presentation on the family systems theory (Beleza and Soares, 2019). I assumed a social role in the group and acted as the resource managers, team leader and coordinator to help the team operate smoothly. As the team 5leader, I helped members understand the purpose of the group, defined roles and responsibilities and managed the efficient use of resources such as time (Belbin, 1993). Two members adopted thinking roles to facilitate thinking and problem solving while the other member assumed the task role to influence the group’s commitment to implementation and completion of the assignment (Belbin, 1993). Leadership and negotiation skills played an important role in the group process. In the initial stages of the group formation, the group members begun developing anxiety, mistrust and competitive behavior which initially triggered conflict.

Conclusion

A brief conclusion is provided for the reflective assignment. Read how our experts have presented all the significant points highlighted in the assignment.

I believe that the group work processes played an important role in building team member experience of collaborative practice. Based on code of ethics defined by the counselling bodies in Australia, practitioners are required to participate in collaborative teams and processes to achieve more viable patient solutions.
